Switching from BG to EON - possible final billing issue

I am switching over on dual fuel from British Gas to EON and it has been confirmed to me (over the phone) that my switchover date will be on Tuesday.

After receiving a letter and then a text from EON asking for a meter reading NOW and then a letter from BG to the same effect, I phoned up both companies today with my meter readings. The problem is that BG said that they will give me an estimated bill for the next 3 days as switchover isn't until Tuesday, but they took today's readings as the 'final meter readings'. I also paid the account in full over the phone (I don't do direct debit)!!

Ideally I would like to avoid an estimated bill for my last 3 days of usage with them (given their history of overestimating a lot!!). Can I give BG another meter reading on the switchover date even though I have given them a 'final meter reading' (which obviously isn't final)? If they won't take the reading from me on Tuesday, how can I dispute the final estimated bill when EON has today's 'final' meter reading on their system? If the estimated bill is in my favour, then can BG somwhere demand an accurate meter reading at some point?

Why don't they just state in their letters that you shouldn't phone through the meter readings until the switchover date and actually state in writing when the switchover date is (to avoid this sort of confusion)??!!

Grateful for any input.

Many thanks in advance.

That's disappointing. The agreed industry procedure is that the reading is given (only) to the gaining company which sends the (same) reading to the losing company.

Within the reading window the *exact* day doesn't matter. Can you post *exactly* what the BG letter said about the final reading.

Hi, normally you don't give your old supplier the meter readings, you give them to your new supplier and they inform the old supplier.

I think you are confusing the situation. The readings you give your new supplier will be the closing reads for the old supplier.

They agree to a switch date and thats it, they are not bothered about being a day or two out as things will average out over the millions of switchs that take place.

I think the point is that BG won't accept the readings you give today as your final readings because they will use the readings from EON to close the account.

You can't give them more readings in 3 days time because when they receive todays reading from EON they will use them. So if the readings you gave to BG and EON are the same then there isn't a problem.

Sometimes they don't switch on the allocated day and in fact the gas and electricity can sometimes switch days apart but they still use the readings you gave to the new supplier days earlier.

    You are worrying to much.

The consolation I would offer, is that EoN are very good when it comes to customer service (well in my experience anyway)....so from hereon it should improve!! And yes....you are worrying too much :)

    Hi iggle_upsy,

I agree with the other posters.

You would normally provide your meter readings to your new supplier when they request these.

The new supplier then sends these over to the previous supplier to enable them to produce your final bill. This means the readings on the final bill should be the same as those that your new supplier opens your account from.

I also wouldn't worry, when you get your final bill just check the readings match those that E.ON have opened your account from.

You can just ring or email to check this.

If you need any more info from us, just ask.
