Good areas to live in the north-east

Would be moving to the North-East (job in Sunderland), having never lived in the north-east before, I would really appreciate if someone could recommend good areas to live around a 5-10 mile radius. Prefer south of the tyne due to travel time and traffic.
Was looking at Boldon, Washington, Chester le street- any help, suggestions welcome! Thanks.
PS- looking to rent a house initially.

Sorry to disappoint you but in my honest personal opinon there is no real 'good area' to live within 5-10 miles radius of Sunderland. For convenience you can choose to live in Washington as it has got good shopping and other facilities. It is very cheap to live around Sunderland area.

Darras Hall will be a good area to live in but that's over 30 miles away from Sunderland.
  • Cleadon is supposed to be nice

    Hendon.

...the one in Sunderland probably has less chance of riots than the one in London.

(But that would probably be the only positive!)

Seriously though....Hylton Castle, Seaburn, East Herrington, anywhere on the cost from Roker northwards.

    :eek::eek:

Not many people can afford to live in Darras Hall.

My personal preference would be around Newcastle maybe even Tynemouth which is very nice and a lovely beach etc but I know you said south of the tyne.

I quite like chester le street especially if you like the cricket as its where the Durham cc ground is and it has a lovely park. It all seems quite green. With good links to Newcastle and sunderland.

You also have Beamish village round there if you want more of a country feel.

The north east is a lovely part of the world and the coastline up to Berwick is some of the best in the country and very underated in my opinion.

Without a doubt, I would say Durham city. Only 12 miles/half hour, and a direct route along the A690. It is a medieval university cathedral city. incredibly attractive, vibrant, excellent shopping/bars/restraunts etc. It's a world heritage site!!! that gives some idea of what others think of it!

Seriously, just have a look at google images for Durham for a start, and then compare them to google images of some of the other places that have been mentioned.

    Durham is very nice.
  • Having lived in sunderland most of my life and now being a taxi driver I know the area pretty well and can tell you which areas to steer clear.of, but when it comes to "nice" areas it all depends on your budget and what you are lookig for. The better areas vary massively in rent prices. Are you looking for a house or flat? How many.bedrooms? Etc, etc.
  • im another to say durham or thereabouts but i live in a village about 5 miles outside of durham.

the only downside to it, is where i work all my collegues are from the same area so i dont tend to socialise with them that much, sure i go to the pub after work but i cant drink cause im driving etc.

Cleadon is probaly the best part of Sunderland and the prices reflect it.
  • Cleadon is in south tyneside.
Also I'm not so sure about hylton castle or roker being good areas.
