External Hard Drive, Wifi, 1TB HELP!!!

Hello

This is my first post in this area - I feel like I am branching out!

Anyway, my husband has announced he would like a hard drive with Wifi, with up to 1 terrabyte storage for his birthday. I know nothing about these things!

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have had a google but thet don't seem to get great reviews, possible the technology is too new? (I may be wrong!) If this is the case does anyone have any other suggestions instead?

ANY help or comments very much appreciated

Thanks
:D

    One option

Click I plan to buy and ask them for any advice they have, you should get a transcript so can post some of it to see if anyone has got any experience of using what they recommend. Don't commit yourself to buying anything

Once you have an idea of what you want, you could e-mail a number of computer hardware suppliers to see if they say the same thing

What budget have you got in mind?

I have one of these, it just plugs in to the router and you access it from any computer using a password protected USB key

There is a 4TB version as well, though the one listed here would need the hard drives added

Try searching for "Network Attached Storage" There was a very useful thread on just this just the other week. :)

he could be meaning a NAS or he could be reffering to something like this, I would get him to 'very strongly hint' at which he actually wants (ie leave the one he wants 'accidentally' open in a web page), as there are so many different ones for different functions it's best to clarify which he wants.

Me, I don't know what he means!

If you left out the word "wifi" I would suggest either a NAS box (as has pogofish) or a simple external USB hard drive. The former is more complicated than the latter.

What does he want to do with it? Does he have any USB 3.0 sockets on his PC/laptop?

And most importantly, how much do you want to spend? For 1TB you are talking in the range £50-£150...

Me neither, although I was wondering if the OP's husband thinks that data can be transferred to it via Bluetooth?

WiFi and bluetooth are 2 very different things! I would imagine he is after a NAS drive. So long as you have a wireless router then you can plug the NAS drive into the router and all other devices attached to the network (wired or wireless) will be able to access it, you can play movies stored on it on a laptop, xbox360, ps3 etc.

Western digital do a decent one for about £100 (Mybook World 2TB)
