Win 7 Freezing

When I turn on my comp running windows 7 professional,it quite often freezes.
It loads my icons on the screen, but the dell dock bar does not show, and it will not let me do anything.
I can't even do con/alt/del to get the task manager open.
So I have to shut the comp down by using the on/off button on my tower.
This can happen two or three times in a row.
I don't have any virus or trojan as I check for these regularly.

Any help would be great thanks

If ctrl+alt+del won't work, then it is totally crashed.
It could be some startup program causing the issue, otherwise it's down to hardware. I would try starting in safe mode and see if you get any lockups there. If you don't, then assuming it's a Dell, you can usually boot into a hardware diagnostics mode and run a full suite of tests.
Maybe also worth posting a Hijackthis log to show what is starting up.
  • Thanks for that :)
I never knew about the hardware diagnostics.
I will give it a go today and post the findings later.

Don't count on it-are you using the Dell pre-installed McAfee or Norton by any chance?

Prob got loads of rubbish running on startup. Download CCleaner and disable some of the apps that run on startup using the tools menu

What is the make and model?

Is it running hot? Can double check with SIW, temperatures section (http://www.gtopala.net/download/siw.exe)

I would post a Hijackthis here as suggested by davb, as this will tell us a lot (http://www.users.on.net/~russ/hjt/).

Are you infected? Run a QUICK scan with Malwarebytes (or a full scan if you like waiting pointlessly) http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

No I don't use Mcafree or Norton I use AVG

I am not sure of make and model :( But I have checked the temps with SIW thanks.
I will post a hijackthis when I get to do it,I am not infected as I run Malwarebytes (thanks for the quick scan tip)

I must admit I did have a few startup programms I did not need and have either deleted them or disabled them.

One point of interest probably nothing to do with it but these problems started once dell said I have no more dell support as the comp is out of warranty.

AVG Free is not a highly rated AV program-use Avira, Avast or MSE as much better free alternatives.

  • Thanks for tall the help I have had :)
After going through everything that I had been told to do/check it is running good again.
And when I open up any programm it does not take ages to open, they open up near enough straight away.
I did have programmes that were starting up and I disabled them

    Thanks all
