Opening a new bank account

Options
My mum would like to open a new account and transfer money from a joint account (she has with her husband for several years) to the new one. What documentation does she need to do this and do both account holders have to sign to agree the money withdrawal?

Comments

  • She needs to prove ID and her address. If she is on voters roll a search may suffice for ID.

The signing rules for the joint account will depend on what they set up when they opened it. Typically joint account mandates are one to sign but in some cases the parties decide they want two to sign.
Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!

Thanks for your reply. My mum currently lives in France so will this affect her ability to open an account (both with the Nationwide where she has banked for year and opening a new ISA with other banks)? She is going to the UK next month so wanted to sort the account then and wants to make sure she has all the documents she needs.

Most banks will not open accounts for non-residents.

However some banks (Santander for one, not sure of others) don't require proof of address if she can produce a passport.

She will however need an address in the UK for her statements and stationary to be sent to.
  • Does anyone know if the Nationwide allows non-residents to open new accounts even if they have banked with them for years?

My mum and dads current accounts are with the Nationwide and they have paperless options and they don't mind sending out statements to France.
