    Chill out love!

You say they came to measure up. Do you have no idea why they were there at all? What are they measuring up for? Have you been informed?

If not, then tell them to s0d off. I wouldn't tolerate strangers in my home for a reason I have no idea about! Why didn't you just kick them out?

Such a shame they didn't have you there Birduk, not everyone (unfortunately) feels able to confront two workmen who have gained access by keys given by letting agents....especially if they feel vunerable. Issue here is agent is at fault, not OP. Think OP's original question was wether it was OK to change the locks, and yes, it is as long as you put them back afterwards. Letting agents/LL wont like it, but how would they know? If anyone did query this, blag it, say they must of had the wrong keys :rotfl:

But I feel for you, as a single female tenant myself (not for long hopefully!), I have often had workmen turn up, whilst the work was requested, arrangeing a suitable time wasn't and I felt very uneasy about it and they didnt even have keys!, hence my ending that agreement....

  • OP, you need to change the BARRELS of the locks, not the whole thing. A new barrel for a yale-type lock should cost about six quid and take about five minutes with a screwdriver to do. Keep the old barrel and replace it when you leave.

To resolve this workmen-entering-without-permission business I think that you should WRITE to the landlord copying in the agent and tell them that you do not authorise anyone to enter without them requesting permission in writing from you first .

Contacting the landlord is another matter entirely, as we don't have their address. We decided ages ago it was best to have it just incase, but even paying £4 for the land registry details lists their address as.......our address! Very frustrating. I know we can get the details from the agent (whether they like it or not), but this kind of thing tends to annoy agents unnecessarily.

But random men entering your home probably annoys you more! Don't worry about the agency, they are being paid to provide a service.

Have you checked your tennancy agreement? Mine has my landlords address on it. If you have no other address but the agency, you can only write to them there and anything beyond that isn't your fault. You shouldn't have to write to them to tell them they can't enter your home, you have a right to enjoy your own home in safety. PLEASE change those locks.

I am a single female renter and wouldn't have a problem shoving people out of my home that aren't meant to be there :D But I do have a very ferocious cat!
  • Birduk - did you get permission for that cat ;)

    How cheeky! Of course! :D

I knew my house was a winner when I walked in and saw a slightly stained carpet and a cat flap. :T No worries about spilling things on a carpet when it is already not great. Although the b*ggers do have a habit of dropping dead rabbits on my cream rug that is covering up the carpet! :(

Try putting a cooking pot on the rug :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
