barter/part ex for car - queries?
                    Hi,
We are looking to buy car. We have seen one at a large garage chain which is for sale for £11950. We have a 20 year old car to part ex. It is taxed and tested. At other garages we have been offered £500 for this part ex. When we fill in online valuation form on this dealer's website, it says it is worth £150.
We have not bought a used car for ages. Should we try and barter on value of part OR should we barter regardless of having a part ex. Was hoping to get car for £11500.

A 20 year old car is (in most cases) just a hassle for the dealer. Best to sell it privately and then haggle with dealer as a cash buyer. But certainly get them to work the figures both ways.
Why do you think a 20 year old car is worth £1k? Sounds way to high unless it's an old W123 Mercedes or a collectible.0

I also wouldn't barter, I'd haggle. I generally find it a lot more effective... in the UK anyway.0

I was a car salesman in a previous life and I'm afraid to tell you that your car isn't worth a cup of cold tea to the dealership. It also sounds like you have the wrong idea about the value of your vehicle and need to be more realistic about what it's worth.
Sell it on Ebay and go in for a straight cash purchase, haggle hard, but don't expect to get £450 off the screen price.Happy with my advice? The please use the 'thanks' button vvvvvvvvvvvvv0

Sounds like the dealer might just sling yours straight to auction due to it's age hence a low price.
Although on a £12k car you do have some space to barter so even if they give you £150 for yours you can still ask for (and probably get) the extra £300 off the car.0
