Small Claims Court Costs

Following a dispute with a builder over unfinished work I debating taking him to small claims court.

It's difficult to put a price on the unfinished work, but I would estimate under a few hundred pounds.

Despite some research, I am struggling to guage exactly what it will actually cost.

Can anyone give me a rough idea of the likely costs:

Opening Claim
Actual Court Costs
Lawyer Req?
Chasing money if awarded

Check the MCOL website, it's not expensive and you shouldn't need a lawyer. https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/web/mcol/welcome

Get some opinions on the remedial work in writing, unless you are a builder your estimate will count for nothing.

You'll need quotes of how much it'll cost to get the work finished (from at least 2 builders), then you need to WRITE to the original builder (Letter Before Action) giving him say 14 days to either finish the work himself, or pay £X (average of quotes) for the work to be finished, otherwise you'll take him to court.

I personally prefer to not use the MCOL service as I find it very restrictive. The Particulars of Claim section makes, in my view, it only suitable for very simple cases. Plus, I'm unable to claim solicitors costs.
