Is there a way to acquire the plans for a building?

Hi!

I live in an apartment building and I'm curious about the layout of the other apartments compared to my own. Is there any government authority that keeps track of all building plans that I can purchase them from? I guess similar to how I can purchase documents for a company through companies house, can the same be done for building plans?

thx.

  • Hi

Have you tried just googling for your buildings plans? I've done that and managed to find the full set of drawings submitted for planning permission originally. No idea where I found them unfortunately (this was last year sometime) but internet searches are always a good place to start.

Try the local planning department? If they were built within the last 10 years (or maybe less) they may even be available on line via the local council.

When I bought my flat, the plans for my floor were included with the lease (with my flat outlined). I think most of the other floors have the same layout on each floor (with the exception of the top floor which was added onto a converted building) so can extrapolate this to the flats on most of the other floors.

I'm not sure but I always assumed that these plans also featured on the land registry too, but depending on how many floors your building has, it may cost quite a bit to get copies of all land registry documents!

You could always knock on doors and ask - you'd get to know your neighbours a bit as well.
