Or try the K-Lite codec packs which have just about every codec you'll ever need... ever.

but if i download the k-lite pack do i need to uninstall my other codecs?
Is it easy to do? Not too confident about doing these things in case i muck things up!

If you have installed any other codec packs yes but if you havent then no just install K-lite.0 -
Have you tried VLC player? Plays near enough everything http://www.videolan.org/0

would def uninstall all your codecs and use one good pack such as k-lite/ffdshow. Also as ian02 says, vlc player plays most stuff without the need for a codec.0
