I think the only way forward here, is for the OP to stop burying her head in the sand, there wasn't a sudden court demand for council tax, there would have been bills, reminder letters etc - by ignoring the problem it gets worse. But by facing the problem - it gets better :-) please dont ignore the council tax non-payment thing, citizens advice or CCCS will be able to help.

... Did you say your husband was working but did not pay tax or NIC!

erm... OK - but those are issues for HIM to heal with and not you.

You're in an unfair situation. I'm not going to tell you to leave him, that's not for me to do. I'm not financially qualified, so I can't advise you about the bailiffs, but what I can say is that please, please use your University counseling services. You need support and decent, qualified advice (not that the advice here is not decent... it is!).

    But you do need support...

Casn you check the date of the CT debt that she has been paying tot he bailiff? I assumed that the old debt was prior to her beign a student?

If not, she needs to get her exemption letters from University (some have links to these on the student portal so she can do the request over the weekend) and she can get those to the Council ASAP.

If might also find it useful to contact her local councillor who may the the only person who can halt the Liaibility order whilst the situation is sorted out and the CT recalculated.

And yes it is entirely her OH's responsibility to pay the CT, but if she finshes shortly, then she becomes jointly liable again.

The bailiffs have written down the kettle, toaster, cooker, hoover, x2 laptops, X box, ps3 my wii+games, dining table + chairs, my 2 settee's, dvd player, printer, deep fat fryer & sandwich maker!

They cannot levy the items in red. They cannot levy the wii if the debt is actually OH's and they cannot take the dining furniture unless you also have a table and chairs in the kitchen (or elsewhere); they have to leave one chair per person.

We still need you to put up details of the fees as if the levy is dodgy, the fees almost certainly include illegal charges.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Why is your name on the council tax? Students (including student nurses) are exempt from council tax so the bill should have the single adult discount and be in your husband's name. If this is not the case you should get it changed, and backdated.

student nurses only get 20% off CT

Please please can anybody give me some advise? I got a parking ticket which i objected to and lost. I was asked to pay 155.00. I received a letter from a collection agency in September asking me to pay 375.04! I rang them and explained i am a lone parent and had lost my job. They asked be to pay 60.00 a month which i explained i could not afford so i offered to pay 20.00 a month which i have been doing. On the 10 Feb a bailiff knocked asking me to pay the full amount outstanding so i again explained my situation and asked why he had come as i have been paying 20.00 a month as promised. He said he would come back with a warrant for my arrest so i closed the door! On the 20 Feb i received a letter asking me for 409.44 and a threat that a bailiff will be calling again!! Surely they cannot do this when im struggling with debt and am paying each month?
