how does wifi work exactly..?

if am abroad and have adsl at home does it mean if i have my laptop with the provider on it i can connect anywhere? is there additional cost of this facility?

wifi on a laptop allows you to connect while in range of your wireless router, usually 100 meters or so.

if you need to access the internet abroad you will need a wireless hotspot (airport, hotel, coffee shop etc). You could also probably use your mobile phone but the costs would be enormous.

Wifi is just a radio signal, with a typical range of 100m designed for within the home. There maybe wifi hotspots around the country and in hotels etc but that's their internet connection and hence you will have to either pay or be careful what details you are sending as it won't be secure. Otherwise you'd want a GSM card I think to use internet over mobile phone network which isn't anywhere near as fast as ADSL obviously.
