Dying over red hair

Hey everyone.
I have dyed red hair. I use Schwarzkopf XXL Live so it's quite bright.
Even though red hair is my trademark, I feel like a change so want to dye it the XXL Cosmic Blue.
Do you think it will be possible to dye over the red hair?
Despite dying my hair alot, my hair is in good condition as I look after it and I don't really want to strip the colour from my hair and loose the good condition that it's in.:o
Thank you in advance.

I'm not a hairdresser, but I remember being told that I'd need to dye my hair red before dying it another colour, like brown (I have blond hair), so I'm guessing red would be a good colour to start with if you wanted to dye it another colour?
Better do a strand test first though :rotfl:0 -
I have natural red hair (check my Forum ID). The rules of colour still apply.
When I tried to dye my hair green, it just turned brown (RED + GREEN = BROWN). If I waggled my head fast enough under a fluorescent light people could see a kind of/sort of green tinge.
You would probably have to strip the dye that's already in first before dyeing your hair any other colour.
I wouldn't know how to do that though, sorry. Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway... :huh:0 -
Has Schwarzkopf got a free phone helpline or a customer support e-mail address? Look on the packet, I feel sure they will know what you need to do!
Hope it works- not just the help but the hair dye!!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

I've tried to dye over this very colour and believe me it is very difficult! You will need to strip out the red colour first, or the red will continue to show through other dyes put on top.
I stripped mine out using that Colour B4 stuff and it worked a treat for me, although it does get some mixed reviews so I would research it a bit first if you're scared of taking the plungecarpe diem

I got in touch with Schwarzkopf and they said to dye over the rest first with a black dye and then put the blue black on top.2019 Wins

I've used cosmic blue over red before (when I was about 15 or so) but it had faded out a LOT by that point so it was more of an orangey brown. It worked fine though. Had problems doing brown over red but black covers everything including the bath, your face and any dangerously nearby towels and flannels
Be warned that cosmic 'blue' might not actually look very blue at all on your hair. It was pretty much just black on mine, the blue tint/shine was only noticeable if you were looking for it straight after dying iyswim and wasn't visible at all after a few washes so my hair actually looked kinda boring.
It went orange when I got bored of it & bleached it out. Orange with a white blond inch near the scalp... bit of a disaster! I had to wear a hat to get the bus to my friend's house to dye it (reddish brown all over again!)0 -
Personally i'd bleach the hell out of it
Though i do that anyway. Though with going blue-purple i was able to dye straight over. With red i've always had to strip it/bleach it out first.

Our lovely teenage daughter used this colour, then decided to go pink with a was out colour, that faded so much ,so we went to salon for some advice about returning to her natural brown shade  we were told that the hair needed to be stripped and that we should stay way from the live colour range in the future, the bill was £125 just to have the hair return to the natural shade, appently unless you want to go black over them ,they are very differcult to remove  hope all turns out well for you.0

Use extra strength colour b4 from boots, I used it to get rid of my red hair
It doesn't strip the hair as such it shrinks the colour molecules so they wash out.
Be warned though it absolutely honks so make sure you have your windows open haha!"Not here for a long time...just here for a good time" - Kat Von D0 -
