if you are on NTL you should already have your own webspace to use
A few instructions about the NTl stuff are here http://www.ntlworld.com/help/customerServices/yourWebspace.html
it requires a bit of HTMl but nothing that can't be gathered from most of the programs out there
failing that create a yahoo ID and use Yahoo Photos for pictures, they have handy utilities that go through all the steps from naming pages etc. right through to taking the pics from your home PC0 -
You can try using one of the builders available e.g. at geocities.com but I found that the results possible were really basic.
What I did:
Used the html “primers” at: http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/basics.html
and this gave me enough understanding to be able to manipulate a basic template from: http://www.freelayouts.com/
I decided on: http://www.bravenet.com/ as a host because they seem stable and have tons of tools I can add as I get more confident.
A few other sites I found useful:
http://www.free-webhosts.com/
http://www.webhostcoach.com/
http://www.grsites.com/
http://www.mailtoprotector.com/
http://www.parasoltraining.com/demo_course.asp (an excellent free html course)
For just pictures:

http://tinypic.com/ (don’t even have to register)0 -
Register with photobucket.com and upload the photos you want to link to onto that site. You can then access them there without the need for a web page. Just an alternative suggestion.

you don't want to use Geocities as they won't let you link.
you can do it with a basic MSN groups account, it can be a bit of a pain but it is possible.0 -
ooo that wanadoo one looks easy i might have a go at that later.
still confused by the whole thing though ???0
