Wiring in a double oven

  • i dont know the exact legislation but i do know the law says that electric coookers/ovens must be installed by a competent person. a manufacturer would not regard the average man on the street as competent, so straight away the warranty wouldnt be valid. also, if anything went wrong, your insurance company clearlyw oudlnt regard you as competent, therefore your home insurance would be invalid. i dont understand why, on such a serious safety issue, some people seem to be so determined to save a few quid

    Probably because there are a hell of a lot of people like myself who are more than competent to wire a hob or whatever to an existing temination and more without a little bit of paper (however there are many who should not attempt to change a fuse). there are people with little bits of paper that say they are competent, but have difficulty walking & talking at the same time let alone work on domestic appliances.

    I agree with your point that IF you screw things up and burn your house down your insurer may decide not to pay out, but by screwing up such a simple task that would show your lack of competence.

    I am speculating (if i am wrong I appologise) that you are a certified and trained electrician who considers that only people with qualifications should attempt such tasks, why then is not all domestic work reportable.

    Please do not go telling people things are illegal when they are not. common sense, competence and legality are three seperate issues.
    At times any combination of my spelling, grammar or punctuation may be incorrect. Please do not pick me up for this as, after all, it is only an internet forum.
  • hi, im in no way an electrician or anything like it, i used to work in electrical retail but am now in an unrelated area. you may well think youa re competent to do the job, but without the paper to prove youa re you are, essentially, not. if your appliance breaks down you will probably find the warranty wont be honoured. if your install goes wrong and hurts/kills someone, you will be entirely responsible and tried as a criminal. also, your insurance would be void. without wishing to sound rude, you say you are competent, but how do you know you are? who has checked your work for safety? you may well be one of the many people who says they are competent, but this time next year you could well be one of the people resposnsible for killing/injuring others, i know that for the sake of a few quid, i wouldnt class myself as competent, my family and thier lives/safety are worth more to me than that, if yours aren't, thats your and thier issue.

    No it does not.

    That is the law for GAS appliances.

    If you are referring to Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales, then

    (a) that does not apply to connection of an appliance to existing wiring;
    (b) that does not require any work to be done by a person who is competent. It requires certain work to be done by a person who is a member of a competent persons' scheme or notified to Building Control. It is not necessary to be trained, qualified or competent to work under a competent persons' scheme, as the scheme applies to the business not the individual fitter.
    a manufacturer would not regard the average man on the street as competent, so straight away the warranty wouldnt be valid.

    Manufacturers' warranties are fairly useless as they rarely last more than a year and you have better rights against the retailer. Anyway, the manufacturer would have to prove you were not competent.
    also, if anything went wrong, your insurance company clearlyw oudlnt regard you as competent, therefore your home insurance would be invalid.

    Unless you are so amazingly reckless that the insurance co claims against you for contributory negligence, your claim would be met. Insurance companies pay out for chip pan fires, which IMHO is people being stupidly reckless given the known dangers of chip pans.

    Because it's really not rocket science to follow some instructions and connect 3 wires to the appropriate terminals following the manufacturers instructions. Some people can't do that, of course, but lots of people can.

    Besides, I've seen wiring done by so-called 'professional' electricians and it is no guarantee of competence.
    A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
