Some are better than others, and give you an idea of your speed.
If you want an absolute figure learn how to log on to your router and look for its line statistics.

unfortunately this is not possible as I have a dlink dir655 cable router with a BT openreach modem, and those stats are unobtainable

I am getting fibre from the cabinet, supposed to be up to 32mb, but did tests with speedtest.net and think broadband and getting speeds of between 3 and 7 or 8 mb, did a test with speedtester,bt and it said speed was 18 mb, with the tolerances being 12 to 38mb, so just wondering if the first 2 would have been accurate or just rubbish..0

Try http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html if you have Java installed,
or http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/broadband.html for a Flash-based tester.
Some AV products buffer the data and so you can get ludicrous results out of Speedtest.net, for example...0 -
I have just done the above test and it shows a speed of 4.6mb lol download upload 1.6mb0

just done a test with speedtester.bt and it has come back at This is why I was asking wether or not the think broadband was a reliable test.
Download speed
achieved during the test was - 26036 Kbps
IP Profile for your line is -38717 Kbps
Upload speed
achieved during the test was - 1599 Kbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 2000 Kbps

If you're getting inconsistent results I would suggest that you do your own test by timing a download of something that you know the size of then calculating the speed (remembering to take into account the 8-fold difference between bytes B and bits b). So for example, if it takes 20 seconds to download a 30MB file (= 240Mb) then your speed is 12Mbps.0

Just a thought, but when they run the upload part of a test, what exactly are they uploading?0

If you want to be as accurate as possible you must do it with an ethernet cable connection to your computer and boot into SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING. This way none of the extra "crap" is loaded that could slow down your computer, eg AV/Anti-malware/ other drivers etc.0
