Gas oven problem from Currys...help!!

Hi everyone, some advice needed please. My 70 year old mum bought a Canon gas oven last year from Currys. Over the last few months its has developed a fault where she puts the oven on, puts something in to cook and it goes out and she smells gas. The next day it works fine. She reported it and we have had 3 different visits from 3 different engineers. they have changed the thermostat, the thermocouple and also increased the gas pressure. It is very intermittent and always works ok when the engineer comes! The same fault occured last week and now they are saying it's "just out of warranty" and that they will come if she pays £190 over the phone for extended warranty or they will come free of charge but charge £50 on the spot if the fault doesn't occur when the engineer is there. We seem to be dealing with about 3 different companies - Currys (our local branch), DSG International (the parent company) and the subcontract company who provide the engineers. We literally feel like we are being passed from pillar to post with this. Has anyone any idea where we stand? Thanks.

DSGI no longer exist, its Dixons Retail now.

As far as smelling gas goes, it should always be Transco or National Grid now, on 0800 111 999, who will send a engineer out to see if there is a gas leak, but from what I read in your original post, it seems that the oven turns off but is still allowing the flow of gas right?

You shouldn't be dealing with the currys local branch, as all they can do is refer it to those upon high at Knowhow.

Need some info, exactly when was it purchased, how much and when did the first fault appear.

Just bear in mind that I don't think that all Cannon gas ovens come with a flame safety device or FSD (I know their hobs do, but really don't think the ovens do)

If this oven doesn't have a FSD fitted, then maybe that's the problem. If the flame hasn't taken properly (i.e. got past the initial ignition burning stage) then the door being closed quickly could cause the flame to go out and the oven will continue to pump out gas.

It may not be a fault with the product, more with how it is being operated...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

  • Hi folks, the oven was purchased just over 12 months ago (hence them stating that it is out of warranty now) however the problem started 9 months after initial purchase and has been ongoing intermittently in between visits from engineers since then. We have all the documentation from each visit.

There is no set time that it decides to go out either, sometimes it's 5 mins, sometimes 10 sometimes 45 mins or an hour. Or sometimes it works fine. I'm not so much bothered as to what the fault is, more to where I stand and who is my dispute actually with!!!! It's hard to know!

Basically, as the original fault happened while still under warranty and we're still getting the same fault - are they just trying it on demanding money for extended cover etc?

I would have thought in this day and age that after 3 visits and a gas appliance still displaying quite a serious fault, that with all the emphasis on Health and Safety these days they would have taken it away for investigation? Seriously, leaving a potentially lethal device in the home of a pensioner who lives alone stating "it'll probably be ok"
  • my own personal opinion is that they have tried to fix the fault and havent yet managed to fix it, warranty valid or not, dont matter one bit to me, i asked for it to be fixed while under warranty and you havent dont it so either bring another or fix this one permanently, would be how the conversation would go if it was my mother
