I have a fair bit of hedging, but my favourite is at the front of the house, it's mostly flowering current, with some lovely little climbing roses mixed in, at the bottom I have a lot of crocosmia planted in it. I ama bout to put some honeysuckle, clematis and potato vine into it to beef it up in parts and to give it a longer flowering period.

I was in donegal a few years ago and seen a lot of lovely fushia hedges, all trimmed like normal privet, but thick with flowers, they were gorgeous, I think I might try to incorporate a bit of that on my land at asome point ;)

Something tough like pyracantha might stand up well to the salt & wind plus provide flowers berrys & shelter for birds whilst giving excellent security too:):)

    Escallonia various varieties.
Birds love nesting in this hedge.
Salt and wind tolerant and great in coastal areas.
Pink flowers various hues, some scented.

Thank you, there are some lovely ideas there.:D Love the idea of the mixed hedge, that is something along the lines I was thinking about.
I have some ideas now so just need to get to a garden centre and have a browse. All the ideas have given me food for thought, so might have a bit of them all, thanks :T

Good idea to have a look at a garden centre, but if you need to buy lots of plants, don't buy there! You'll save lots of money buying online from the link above, or from Buckingham Nurseries. I bought 150 3-4ft beech saplings from them for £180 - I dread to think how much that would have cost at a garden centre!

They do a couple of nice looking Escallonias at not much more than £2 a plant if you buy 5 or more.

I have also used this company when buying holly to plant a hedge. It saved me a fortune & very good service from them.

I bought a load from Buckingham Nurseries last winter, most were about 18" and cost about £1.50 each, they do a wildlife mixture or you can pick whichever you like. I think if i remember it was about a minimum of £50 order. They've started growing great.
