Ideas for jars of dips, please?

Options
My mum gave me a couple of jars of Morrisons Dips which were left over from Christmas. Since we don't like dips and I don't want to waste them, has anybody got any ideas what I could do with them?

One is Cool Tomato Salsa (tomato and pepper based) and the other is Garlic and Herb (mayonnaise type).

Any ideas would be welcome - thanks.

  • maybe you could use the tomato one as a base for a pasta sauce or in anything where you would normally put chopped tomatoes?

I would use the garlic one as a dressing for chicken in a bun.

The sala might be nice as part of a chilli / mexican style casserole

mix some cheese in with the mayo one and stuff some chicken breasts ?
or cook some mushrooms slowly and make a creamy garlic mushroom salad ?

    Tomato Salsa

Quick supper using tortilla chips, add few dollops of tomato salsa, top with grated cheese & bung in oven for about 8-10 mins.

Use instead of tomato sauce for spreading on pizza base.

Use as a filling with cheese on a toastie.

Spread on a tortilla wrap, fill with strips of chicken/roast beef/roast vegetables/filling of your choice, shredded lettuce, grated cheese, spring onions, sour cream (or use some of the garlic & herb dip instead of sour cream).

Add to mince or chicken as a sauce & heat through. Serve with rice or pasta.

    Garlic & herb.

Use as sandwich/wrap spread instead of butter and make up with filling of your choice.

Use as salad dressing for a green salad (you might have to add something like lemon juice, olive oil to thin it down a bit).

Make up a coleslaw/potato or pasta salad and use garlic & herb dip instead of mayonnaise type dressing.

I forgot to say that I am a veggie but I will adapt some of your meat ideas. When my mum gave them to me I thought they would sit in the cupboard for ages but now I have loads of ideas they will be used by the end of the weekend!

Thanks everyone! Just off to make myself an egg mayonnaise sandwich using one of the dips!!
  • I used a mini tomato salsa dip the other day in making a chick pea curry. Tin of chick peas, tub of salsa, onion, mushrooms, tomato puree, garlic puree and garam masala. DH took one portion of it to work and had it on a jacket potato, the other portion has been frozen for a meal next time he's on a late shift.

Yes, the simplest thing is to use them as a kind of sandwich accompaniment.

How this gets around your 'not liking dips' is another matter. I can only take it that you don't like the action of 'dipping' rather than the taste!

You are right, cordial, it is the action of "dipping" don't like rather than the taste of them otherwise i would have said no to my mum. But knowing that January was going to be a financially tight month I accepted them knowing the good folks on the site would help me with ideas - and indeed you have !!

  • If you like baked sweet potatoes this will make enough for two servings of a topping to go with them. The spiciness works really well.

    400 g can of tomatoes
    tablespoon of Tomato puree
large can of red kidney beans or black beans
    1/2 jar tomato salsa/dip
    red onion, fried
    Red pepper, diced and fried

You could also add textured soya protein to bulk it out and make it similar to chili. Anything goes, and adjust the ingredients to taste.

i know u said ur a veggie , but u may be able to adapt this to suit. but what we do with dips ( other than dipping ) cook pasta , chicken , brocoli , mushrooms and mix a dip with it. then serve with grated cheese. it is scrummy. but i could imagine with pasta most veggies could be added.
