Would our travel insurance pay out?

My hubby has pre-existing medical conditions and, as a result, we're finding travel insurance costs extremely high. We're heading off for 6 days in Spain at the end of August and I've taken out insurance cover for us both but haven't declared his medical conditions. We're fully aware of the risks of this and are completely prepared to accept the consequences and costs should something happen to him overseas. His medical conditions are minor compared to some people but the costs to cover him would be more than the cost of our holiday! My question is, if either of us had to claim for anything non-medical (i.e. lost passport, baggage, cancellation etc) and the travel insurance company don't know about his medical conditions, are we covered?

The whole policy can be voided if you have deliberately lied to the insurer.

So you're prepared to charter an aircraft to bring his home in an emergency for a 5 figure sum??
In which case you don't need insurance.

If there has been no change in his medical conditions in the past 12 months and no GP visits, apart from routine check ups, www.eta.co.uk will cover.

Don't forget to take an EHIC card, so that you can access Spanish state health services.

In regard to the issue you have, your policy would exclude anything related to your husbands pre existing medical condition. If you claimed for something totally unrelated, I am not sure the Insurers would find out about the medical issue, as any enquiries they made would relate to the type of claim being made.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • There are several approaches insurers can take to pre-existing medical conditions from simply excluding cover through to full underwriting of the policy and full cover for them.

If they are minor and unlikely to flair up then some insurers will cover you but exclude claims in connection with the pre-existing conditions - probably fine for a minor skin complaint, probably not an issue if its heart issues etc.

My friend went to Canada for three weeks last year. Despite having had heart bypass surgery and other issues, he got travel insurance for around £500.

Given the possible costs of repatriation in a suitable air ambulance, this doesn't seem such a high cost to pay for the reassurance of knowing you're properly covered.
