New Laptop Help

Hi Everyone,
I have a new laptop which runs Windows 7 64bit. The display looked a bit washed out so I searched for brightness/contrast controls and found them in Catalyst Control Center under Desktops & Displays then Desktop Management. I tweaked the gamma, brightness and contrast settings and then shut CCC. A few minutes later I decided to go back and change it a little bit more but Desktop Management had disappeared. If I go into advanced mode it reappears on the right-hand side but the only option is advanced display settings and it doesn't matter what I click in that I can't get it to reappear.
I tried restoring everything to default to see if all the other options would reappear but they didn't. I also tried to download the most recent version from the AMD website but at the installation screen I got an error message saying the version of my graphics adaptor is not supported. I checked the driver on my graphics card and searched for an update - there was one available so I installed that and then tried CCC again but still no change. I also tried rebooting a few times and each time I reboot or click on CCC now I keep getting asked if I want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to my computer. This was not happening before. I'm baffled as to what has gone wrong with it.
I also spotted something in device manager when I was looking to update the graphics driver. There is an "unknown device" in Other devices. Under details it says "00000040" and "CONFIGFLAG_FAILEDINSTALL".
I'd be grateful for any ideas on how to deal with these problems as I've been going round in circles trying to find fixes online. Thanks.

I'm afraid I can't help with your specific problem, but the general problem is the ATI drivers. On my own PC (desktop) if I install the latest drivers the machine blue-screens on install and becomes inoperable. resulting in a 'safe mode' boot and a forced uninstall of the driver..
I cannot advise ENOUGH to back up and research how to fix the machine after the new drivers are installed just in case. In my experience with modern ATI drivers its simply best to leave them be if they work at all...0 -
Hi Podcake,
Thanks for the reply. I've still not managed to find a way to fix it but I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I don't think I can do anything about the drivers anyway since it won't let me download the latest version of CCC.
Every time I reboot the system now I'm getting a message asking if I want to allow ccc.exe to make changes on my computer. This wasn't there before last night - mind you I've only been using the machine 2 days! It says ccc.exe has an "unknown publisher" - I would have expected it to say ATI or AMD for that but I've never had problems with this before so I'm clueless really.
I'd be grateful for any other advice. Thanks.:hello: :hello: :hello:0 -
if it's only 2 days old, factory restore it.!!
