Painting over metallic paint-What do I use?

I am about to redecorate my large hall.
It has a border of approx 4" squares around the very top of the walls in a graduated range of copper colours with one of the squares actually in a copper metallic craft type paint.
I cant really remember exactly what i used-think it was a plasticote make/brand.
I know that the border will need rubbing down and some sort of sealant applied, but what would be the best thing to use?
(I have asked in B&Q and they really didnt have a clue!!)
I would appreciate any help and recommendations-Thank you

You'll get better advice in a trade paint place. Dulux have trade centres in most towns but I am a big fan of Johnstones/Leyland paints - I've always found them very helpful. The paint is cheaper and, in my opinion, better quality too. You can also ring their technical centre - get the number on the website - and they're very helpful.

Use white undercoat. 2 coats will seal it and then you can paint over with emulsion.
