name on passport different to booking?

booked with easyjet to travel to alicante next friday, mother and father in law going, i booked as a surprise so wife or noone knew
mother in law is called Eileen since i have known her so i booked the flight on Eileen, but when i called today to get passport details to check in online it has Eleanor on it, (Eileen is the irish version of Eleanor). according to easyjet to change name it would cost 40 each way + difference in flight cost now which is almost £500 in total.
dont fancy paying that of course , so as we are hand luggage only and have boarding cards already what do you think i should do?
i can bring utility bills etc showing Eileen on it.

The name on the passport needs to match the name on the booking. You don't have a lot of choice here - either (a) pay for a name change plus the difference in cost, or (b) book a whole new flight. Either way it's going to cost, and unless you want to run the risk of being denied boarding, you might as well pay.dont fancy paying that of course , so as we are hand luggage only and have boarding cards already what do you think i should do?
FYI 'Eileen' is the ENGLISH version of the Irish name 'Eibhlin', and NOT the IRISH version of Eleanor. Whether easyJet staff know that is another matter, but I suspect they wouldn't accept it anyway.Eileen is the irish version of EleanorIf I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.0 -
thanks but FYI;
The name Eleanor is a variant of Helen. Other popular variants of the name Helen are: Alena (Russian), Alyena (Russian), Eileen (Irish), Elaina, Elaine (English), Eleanor (French), Eleaonora (Swedish), Elena (Spanish), Elina (Russian), Eliora (Israeli), Ellen (Dutch), Elna (Danish), Haliana (Polish), Halina (Polish), Helena (Latin), Helene (French), Hellen (English), Helli (Finnish), Ilona (Hungarian), Lene (Norwegian)0 -

Still doesnt change the fact the name HAS to match the passport.
Your only options are to either pay the extra, leave her at home
or cancel the trip and lose what you have allready paid.
Sorry if it sounds harsh but they wont let her board.
You seem to have shot yourself in the foot with the above quote too.
you say, The name Eleanor is a variant of Helen and that Helen is also known as Eileen (Irish),0 -
The name on the passport has to be exactly the same as the name on the booking I'm afraid. If you have already asked Easyjet and they have told you this then she wont be allowed to travel on that ticket. I don't know why they would chareg the difference for the flight cost though if you have already bought the ticket, surly it should just be a name change?0

Print the above and take with you
. I dont fancy your chances though, if EJ are telling you they will charge
FYI wikipedia give the explanation as 'Eileen' is the ENGLISH version of the Irish name 'Eibhlin'0 -
OP - sorry to hear of your dilemma. Unfortunately, whilst airlines impose these charges to preclude people deliberately booking and on-selling cheap tickets, the Terms and Conditions also catch genuine errors, per your own circumstances.
There's probably not a lot you can do, other than persist with EJ, and hope that you talk to somebody there who is prepared to be more understanding (it does happen - a work colleague of mine had almost the same exact problem as yours...and the airline concerned - also EJ - generously made an exception to the rule.) Good luck.0 -

Because it could be a completely different person. For example if you knew a group of you were going to go away but werent sure who, you could book 10 seats as soon as they're released & then change the names right before you go. It wouldn't be fair if they only charged a name change fee would it?COMP WINS FOR HUBBY & I SINCE SEPTEMBER:2 £50 DOMINOS VOUCHERS, 13 PAIRS OF FOOTBALL TICKETS, MICROSOFT HOME EDTN, 2 PAIRS OF ALTON TOWERS TICKETS, 1 CASE OF PERCY PIGS, 1 PAIR OF LEATHER LADIES GLOVES, 4 COLLECTION 2000 PRODUCTS, PLAYSTATION 3 WITH FIFA 12, 5* HOTEL STAY IN LONDON, SEASON 6 OF SUPERNATURAL DVD, PERFECT PIZZA VOUCHER0 -

That is what I would do. Keep ringing easyJet customer services until you find someone who will correct the name without charge. The name change fee is for changing to a different passenger, not for making clerical corrections concerning the same person.0 -

Most airlines will correct spelling errors for free if being nice, also correct shortened names to full names but most will not change to a different name. How is the airline meant to know that this is not a sister, aunt, daughter etc.?Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -
just an update, phoned again but kept hanging up till i got someone who could speak english and was lucky enough to get someone else from n irleand and she changed it for me at no cost. so can relax now.
