Faulty goods - Quick Q

Hey there,
Around 3 or 4 months ago, we purchased a Russell Hobbs kettle from Tesco.
Being so long ago, we no longer have the receipt.
The kettle has just started smoking from the switch on the side of the kettle :-0
I contacted tesco who basically said, "if you don't have the receipt then its tough. buy another one."
I contacted Russell Hobbs as it is well under a year old and they said to post it to them, and they will replace it or give us a discount voucher for another one.
A couple of questions-
A) Is it acceptable for Tesco to wash their hands of the responsibility, being that we paid cash and have no proof of purchase (product has a black and yellow Tesco security sticker, but no proof of date)
If the item is faulty, are Russell Hobbs responsible for the postage costs? (postage alone is £7!!)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Tesco are within their right to refuse as you have no receipt. Russell Hobbs are going above and beyond (your contract was with Tesco) to help you so would not be liable for the return postage as it's a good will gesture from them.0

To echo:
A) Without proof of purchase (this doesn't have to be a receipt, it could be a card statement or similar), Tesco are not liable for anything - for all they know, you could have purchased it from another company!
As Russell Hobbs have no responsibility to you in law, anything they are doing is at their discretion. So they would not be liable for the postage. Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
