Credit Check Fees for Renting

I've recently applied to rent a bungalow, along with my husband we filled out the credit reference forms, being very honest about my past bankruptcy in 2008, at the estate agents. We then parted with £260 for the privillage. The following day we received a call from estate agents saying we had failed the credit check due to my bankruptcy and if we wanted to proceed any further we would need a guarantor. My daughter was willing to do this so she filled in relevent form and we parted with £120. Three days later we received a call saying we had been declined due to some arrears in rent from a previous landlord over 12 months ago. Should this not have been said before advising us to find a guarantor? It all seems wrong somehow that we have parted with a total of £380 and now have nothing to show for it. Any advise welcome

I'm very sorry this has happened to you..
Particularly as checks for agents can be as cheap as £6:95.. e.g.

and some unscrupulous agents appear to use these checks as a source income rather than as a genuine service...
Unfortunately I fear you have no redress - if so that's wrong but...0
