Double glazed sash windows

I need to replace a couple of wooden sash windows in a Victorian semi. They are approximately 110cm x 150cm. I want wood grain effect uPVC sliding sash replacements. I would rather use a local company rather than a national, and I am in Ascot, Berkshire. Saracen in Sunninghill were a respected company but have gone bust. Does anyone know of a good quality, cheap firm in this area, and how much I should roughly expect to pay?
Thanks.

I have used quickslide a few times - installed by a local fitter.
someone will no doubt tell you i work for them and they are terrible as seems to happen when someone mentions the name!! however i've never had any issues with them, and you can usually squeeze their prices a bit too

  • Thanks. I did contact Quickslide but they have no recommended fitters in my area and I am not keen to have one company provide the windows and someone else fit them as they will blame each other for any problems.

I did get a quote from a local company:

Three windows in total - two sash windows 128cm x 168cm and one casement 115cm x 135cm = £2400. Nothing fancy - no wood grain effect, no safety glass. Seems a lot to me?

There is a lot more work on a sash window so the price will be more than just say a flat bathroom window, however I would go through a few firms within your area and request any quote be made with toughened safety glass.

The trim required on these does take a fair bit of time to put in, more so if they are box sash windows.

Cannot answer price question, too little information, you make the assumption that all products, architrave, fittings, energy ratings are the same, these make a huge difference. Also the work you cannot see, how the products are fitted, lugs, insulation,or held with expanding foam only!

Wood White foil also varies widely. Are they secured by design police preferred specification

Ask if the manufacturer guarantees the workmanship of their local installers

I would expect our installers to charge £1200/1400 for the top product (spec as above, foil, sbd a rated, guaranteed etc) or £850/1100 for standard, non fancy extras but all correctly fitted. That said I have been called to dozens of competitor installations where retail customers have bought from the Internet thinking they were getting the bargain of the century.

One example of these problems was filmed by cowboy trap and the home owner built his own web site to warn others wwwdoubleglazingshop-nightmares.co.uk don't say you haven't been warned!

Buying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run.

  • My sash windows rattle.
I guess they are very old, but that’s not really an excuse.
It is quite hard to position the staff bead so that it is close enough to the window to stop rattling and still be able to open the window.

    The solution.
    The Rumple
The Rumple fixes on to the staff bead.
Costs pennies and very easy to make.
    Full instructions for making one:
Do a google search for instructables rumple
