No hot water unless the heating is on

Having a bit of a problem. It's cropped up a few times and seems to right itself so far. Sometimes (like today) the boiler doesn't heat up the water or indeed engage at all. It does engage if I put on the central heating.

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing and if they'd managed to sort it without recourse to a plumber?

We have a hot water cylinder and one of these attached to the boiler http://www.advancedwater.co.uk/products/520-146-0089(115W).jpg

Thanks :o

And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!

Can't get your link to work but it might be related to a faulty motorised valve.

I believe it's an expansion tank - sorry, the link seems to have failed. A faulty valve. Darn. I assume that would need a plumber (my skills are probably up to wacking it with a spanner!)

  • I would agree with garethgas, had the same problem myself that you describe and it was the valve mentioned, new one fitted and problem solved, i know they are not all the same price but as a guide the valve cost approx £50 for mine.
  • Mine was a 3 port motorised Honeywell valve cost £45 brand new delivered and plumber took 1 & 1/2 hours to drain system, replace valve and refill system. Plumber charged £25 per hour + vat, so was £100 all in. I did also buy some inhibitor for the plumber to put back in the system when he refilled it, that was about £10.

Then it worked fine after that.

My problem was different though, my radiators were heating up when hot water came on, even though the central heating wasnt on.
