You licence covers you for mopeds so you won't need L plates or a test... ever.

As long as your full licence includes group "p" (usually it's bunched in with other obscure codes f k l n for track-laying vehicles and so on) then you are fully licenced and don't legally need a CBT or L plates.

If your full car driving licence was issued before 1 Feb 2001 then you have a full Category P Entitlement (full moped licence). Accordingly, you can ride a moped without restrictions and without having to do a CBT. I recommend that you still complete the CBT for your own safety!

That's a bit ambiguous, because as I passed my test a few years ago, but have my licence re-issued every three years, does that mean I have lost my moped entitlement?

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to say yours is a great post - I was going to ask why you're not planning to cycle the three miles though!

Personally I think the car test pays too much attention to parking and reversing, not enough to safe driving. Failing it doesn't necessarily mean you're not safe to be on the roads, it could just mean you need a very big space to park the car in!

Being able to park and reverse properly is safe driving.

My question was somewhat rhetorical and pointing out the ambiguity of the remarks by "Best Motorcycle Information;" not really what it says on the tin, is it ;).

Seems pretty straightforward. It's when it was issued, not when it was re-issued.

My driving licence says that it was issued in 2009, that would mean that, according to "Best Motorcycle Information," I do not have a full moped entitlement. My point is, the information was ambiguous.

If you passed your car test after 1st February 2001 then you will need to complete CBT to validate the full moped licence.

The government site also goes on about issued, so if you renew your photo, the date on the front of your licence will change.
If you look at the back, that'll give you your pass dates.;)
  • If your planning on riding a bike my advise would be to do the CBT anyway as it will show you how to ride and hopefully make you a saver biker - a CBT is only £100ish... well worth it in my eyes
