Data recovery from memory stick

Can anybody help please. My main laptop had to be sent away for a new hard drive. I backed up folders files etc to a memory stick which I used in a spare laptop until my main one was returned. The memory stick worked fine in the spare laptop and I was able to open and save files. I put them memory stick in my returned laptop to transfer the folders and files but when I open the drive the folder names had disappeared to be replaced with a mixture of symbols and letters and when I try to open the folders I get the message windows needs to know what program you want to use to open this file. I then tried it in my spare laptop and get the same problems. The memory stick was working fine minutes earlier in my spare laptop, the problem seemed to arise when I tried to open it in my fixed laptop.
Is there anyway I can recover the data on the memory stick??
