Do I cancel DD after switching?

Checking my EDF online account, I noticed I went on live ith electricity on the 22nd July and 28th July with Gas. I received a letter from my previous supplier SP informing me I need do nothing as they will cancel the direct debit. I have already received a final bill and a cheque for electricity, waiting for the gas bill to arrive. SP used to take only one direct debit for both fuel, now I have noticed there are two seperate DD one for electricity and one for gas. Should I cancel all three of them or wait and see if SP will take any DD for the month of September? Thanks

I was with SP until 3 months ago (dual fuel tariff) and paid each month by Direct Debit.

However, when I left them, they split my final bill into 2 separate bills; one for Gas and another for Electricity. Instead of claiming the money via my original DD, Scottish Power started two new Direct Debits with my bank; one for Gas and another for Electricity.

As soon as the final bills were paid, I cancelled the original DD plus the two new ones.
  • Yes, they did that with me as well. I got a final bill for gas and they then sent me a cheque. I then got a final bill for electricity, and they then withdrew £22 from my account even though the bill showed I owed them £0. I'm now waiting for them to pay that back. I have now cancelled my SP DDs.

I think there was a thread somewhere advising not to cancel the DD until all final bills had been cleared...

Anyway I have switched from SP (i.e completed the process) over a week ago and have not heard anything yet from them so I emailed them requesting a final bill ASAP and giving them notice that I would be cancelling my DD unless I heard from them within 7 days. I probably at worst only owe them £10.
If the ball had gone in the net it would have been a goal.

  • I have absolutely no idea why. In my case there is £0 owing, then they issue a final bill to show there's £0 owing, then withdraw £22 from a secondary DD, only for them to then tell me they owe me £22. Why did they set up a secondary DD with my bank and withdraw an amount that I didn't owe? It's ludicrous!

Another thing - How are they able to set up second DDs in my bank account without me authorising them?

I am wondering about the secondary DD as well, how can they set them without our consent? Although they say do not cancel dd until you get final bill, I am going to do it by the end of August. Thanks
