Which car ? - If you had choice

  • I find motor cars rather boring but for some reason I do occasionally read Auto Express (warez download).
Apparently the Ford Fiesta is a good buy as is the box shaped Golf. Suzuki Swift got a good write up as did Skoda.
Corsa too. Try going on the Auto Express & Honest John websites.
If I had a choice of car I would personally opt for a 900cc Fiat 500 - totally useless for your needs though.

I am restricted to an auto cause -mrs blacksta passed her driving test on an auto licence ( After so many fights on why it is wrong to pass on auto licence - cause it limits your options - but she refused to heed my advice - hence i have to suffer as well )

  • The only Automatic I have driven is a Smart. Its very quick on the motorways & the fuel lasts for ever. Perhaps you could pick one up at an Auction. Never pay a car dealer £2000+ in profit. Take a mate if its your first time.

Are you sure you are getting a 1.4 polo DSG for £4-5k??? I'd say more like £9k?

Anyway I'd agree and pick a bigger car for motorway use, focus is fine there are plenty others to pick from though. Sitting at 70 / 80 all day in a small car with a 1.4 auto will make you want to end it all

Oh god yes. I'd forgotten about how bad a 1.4 auto is. Had a 1.4 auto Corsa with 87 miles on the clock as a courtesy car once. Every gear change was a jolt and a kick in the back, probably because those little engines need a lot of revs to actually get anywhere.

Traditional autos really do suit the larger, lazier, low revving engines more.

DSG type boxes are probably not so bad on the smaller engines, but the only car I've tried one on was a 2.0 Golf GT TDi. It was ok but a little bit weird because it's possible to end up rolling backward unlike a traditional auto, and there is no creep.

While looking at depreciation, weigh it up against the fact you'll be buying a newer car for the same money. Too many people get so hung up on depreciation they end up buying a near-10 year old car just because it'll "lose" £300 less over 5 years -- problem being that at that age there is no guarantee that the car will even reach 5 more years.

Depreciation is turned on its head once you're looking at cars over three years old. You're after the car with the savage depreciation at this point.

I think i have gotten my terminology wrong - I thought every auto on VW since 2006 was DSG

Ah OK, nah that's just your standard slushbox. Better in that it will undoubtedly be far more reliable than any dsg, worse in that I thought you wanted a 1.4 tsi (do they even do these in a Polo) which would be a good engine for the job.

Imo you want something diesel and auto, mid 2000's a4, passant, Octavia or even bora for example -just stay away from the cvt box, any of these small cars will be a horrible drive with a gutlessness engine coupled to a torque converter auto.
