hi i have read that acclaim flea spray is available only from vets but have also seen many sites that you can buy it from, are there 2 different types of acclaim? or is it wrong that you can only get it from vets?
also is it ok to hoover soon after you spray acclaim or is it best to leave it before hoovering for a certain amount of time?
do you have to leave the house after you spray?
thank you very much

Hi. As far as I know, there is only one household Acclaim spray, but you can buy it all over the place. I get mine online from Vet UK (currently £8 there) and have used it for years. If you do choose to purchase it at the vets, they'll probably charge you an arm and a leg!
In terms of correct application, simply spray on a room-by-room basis, close the doors as you go and move on until all the house is sprayed. Leave the house closed up for half an hour and then throw open the doors and windows to air out. People and pets should really be vacated during that half hour.
If you have a live infestation at the moment, I personally would leave the spray un-hoovered for a day and then hoover. Keep hoovering each day after that if you can for a couple of weeks.
I really rate Acclaim: it lasts up to a year, just remember to keep hoovering too.
N.B. This product is toxic to aquatic life, as are most flea sprays.0 -
I bought Acclaim from Pets at Home - around £12 a can I think, which was ample to do my three bed mid terrace.
I had a bad infestation of fleas (came home from holiday to find the house jumping with them).
I was a bit doubtful about whether it would work - but it DID! I cleared the house of people and pets (put frontline on the offending cat) and sprayed each room as instructed on the can. left it for an hour rather than half hour as I had errands to run. came back and aired the house, then later that day vacuumed and immediately emptied the vacuum.
I did see fleas for a couple of weeks - but they were so obviously dying or impaired I wasnt too worried. a fortnight later my house was definately flea free! The Sales Assistant at PAH did recommend the Smoke Bomb - but as myself and son were asthmatic I went with the Acclaim and I am glad I did. I recommend it to everyone! (wish the company would pay me! could have earned a lot of commission by now!).0 -
2 days ago we sprayed acclaim on our carpets and noticed an immediate improvement: we saw no fleas for 2 days after suffering a bad infestation in out house with fleas all over me everyday and were very happy about the improvement, after leaving it for 2 days i hoovered and immediately they are back crawling up my legs again: misery
do i need to spray acclaim everywhere again?0 -
It takes time for the spray to take hold. What you are most probably seeing is the newly hatched fleas being encouraged to emerge from their pupae by the hoovering. Unfortunately there is no insecticide available which works on the pupae, they have to hatch before the insecticide can kill them. Re-spray in about a week's time.0

Did you solve the problem in the end?
Unfortunately the pupae live for months, cling to the carpet like glue, and need little food.
According to the label it doesn't kill pupae directly but:Acclaim contains Precor, a long acting insect growth regulator which prevents flea eggs and larvae from maturing into adults - this breaks the life cycle and gives continuous protection for 12 months when used as directed.
Acclaim also contains an insecticide which will kill any adult fleas which continue to hatch in the first weeks following treatment
If an animal is bringing fleas back in from the garden I can understand why spraying is less effective.0 -
Skoosh is a silicone based non insecticidal spray which uniquely kills the flea in ALL it's life stages.0
