Manchester city centre

Hi all

Due to exchange on a flat slap bang in the centre soon- in a great location!

Am I mad to go through with this thinking about what happened last night?

Part of me thinks...it's the city centre....it's a nice flat...I'm getting it a a good price...people are always going to want to live there aren't they?!

But also concerned about the implications of the property being above a commercial premises...like most flats in the centre!

Any opinions?

    I wouldn't worry.

It's raining at the moment in the centre so there will be riots if it rains.

How long are you planning to live there? What is it that appeals to you about living in the city centre? How many nights of rioting have there been in the last however-long-the-answer-to-the-first-question-was? Is it worth missing out on the advantages of city centre living for the risk of being affected by rioting at the probability you've just worked out?
  • I would not worry about that, if you you like the flat then these riots should not stop you. Whereever you will buy you just have to expect the best and prepare for the worst- what is the liklihood of people roting again in the next 20 years- little if not none. Good luck with your purchase

I lived in a city centre flat on Berry Street in Manchester 2006-2007 had a ball and there was never any trouble. Used to regularly walk back from Piccadilly alone. This was before they built the new hotel that's now just by there.

The nightlife noise and general mini size of apartments would put me off almost as much as the riots.

Ardwick, Hulme, Ancoats, are all directly next to the city centre and indeed are only a bike ride away.
Apologies to the other areas I've missed off the list on the north side.

Assuming the IRA don't plant another bomb I'd say you'll be fine.

I wouldn't let the riots put me off. The authorities have been caught off-guard and weren't prepared for what happened. This sort of thing happens everywhere, it's just that most countries are prepared for it. We have been cushioned until now as we haven't had to deal with it. Now they know what they are up against, they will find ways to deal with it.

I own a flat in the city centre (not above a commercial premises though), and, to be honest, it wasn't that bad (I guess it may be different if you lived on Deansgate or Market Street

I can't see it affecting property prices- people will always want to live in the city centre.

As an aside, big up GMP who did an absolute cracking job
  • Thanks for the advice- you've echoed what I've been thinking- that I should go ahead! It's just family members that have been worrying and putting me off.

The ironic thing is that I already live in the same development I'm planning on buying in, so I'll be here for a couple of years anyway...

That bomb was one of the best things to happen to Manchester. :)
