How much would you charge your family?

Hi,

I've just finished University and have just got a job and wondered how much i will have to pay in rent but they havnt decided yet.

Just thought i would ask how much everyone else would charge.

Its a 4 bedroom house but im only in one. Only evening meal is provided. I would have to contribute towards electric etc and would have to pay cancel tax for myself. I do my own washing but using the family washing machine.

My job salary is 15.5k

Any thoughts? We are located in fareham, Hampshire.

Thanks in advance.

  • One third of your take-home pay is average. Depends on whether your folks need the oncome or are happy to subsidise you

Usually when grown-up kids carry on living at home, parents take "keep" money off them which will include all costs. If one-third of your wages is enough to cover those costs, that's the figure that's usually suggested.

Any fit adult who lives at home should also be doing a fair share of the chores.

If there are already two or more non-student adults living in the house, then there will be no additional council tax to pay.

If it were me, I'd take into account your lifestyle and future plans too. If you're living the highlife and p*ssing the rest of your wages up the wall then you can bloomin' well pay your fair share of everything. But if you're scrimping and saving hard trying to get together a decent nest egg to buy whatever you're needing (house deposit, car, training for career move or whatever), then I'd try to support your efforts by only taking a token rent / minimum I could afford to manage on. If it were my family...

I've just moved back in with my parents. I am not paying rent, nor contributing towards the mortgage. However I expect to contribute a 3rd to the following:

Water, Electricity, Gas, Council tax, TV-license, Broadband, Home-insurance, misc household goods.

I shall be providing my own food, toiletries and doing my own cooking and laundry. I'm also on hand to help out, and will be sometimes cooking for my parents, partly because I like showing off my flair in the kitchen.

I think this is very good arrangement and fair for all concerned.

I was super lucky, My parents asked for a 'rent' from me that went into a savings account, when i wanted to buy my house they gave me the money back for the desposit. Their logic was that they didnt need the rent from me but thought that way was the best for me to build a deposit without needing it. however i was only living there 3 months of the year, rest i was working abroad, but still paying rent the whole time.

    worked well for me.

Groan, and with a uni education.

Anyhow....my daughter left school, got herself a job around the £16k mark, I don't charge her a bean - if I was desperate, I know she would contribute, but she often does a couple of shops a week for food/washing powder/dog food/toiletries etc. I am watching her savings grow, she doesn't go out clubbing or drinking, has had a steady boyfriend for 3 years, so far I reckon she has at least £20k in savings................if she started wasting money, I'd pounce on her for 25% of income.

I paid my parents £150pcm which increased to £175pcm from the day i left school. It took me 2 months to get a job, so i owed them back rent. This was just under a third of my monthly take home, once i got it!
saving up another deposit as we've lost all our equity.
We're 29% of the way there...
