X-Box 360 help required

Our eldest Lad got an X-Box 360 from Santa along with an Play-Asia copy of Smackdown v Raw 2007 and within 48 hours the disc was displaying as `dirty , please clean and restart console` I took it to be professionally cleaned and was told that the console had damaged the disc and that I should take it back to the shop where it was bought . Problem , it was actually won in a raffle though my work and I`ve no idea where it came from as it was donated by . . . .well , some-one? Therefore I decided it was probably due to the game being Asian and proceeded to buy a PAL copy from Asda for his Birthday (29.12) which played fine until today and , yes you`ve guessed it , it`s stopped playing and there are serious scratches on underside rim of the DVD game .
Is this in fact being caused by the console and if so is there any way of contacting Microsoft direct for repair ? If so then is this going to be expensive ?
Any help at all here would be appreciated
Thanks
Hairy

I've had that error before. Does it occur often?

I used to get it when playing Oblivion. It'd randomly happen, usually after 30mins to an hour.

There was an update a while back which stopped it happening on Oblivion. The same may apply to S vs R. Do you have it connected to the internet? Make sure you have all the latest updates if you do.

Also were you told to take the game back or the Xbox? And do you have the Xbox sat flat, or vertically? It is a know problem where the Xbox sometimes scratches up the disc. If you take it to the shop they should replace it if you explain the problem, if not possibly contact Microsoft. One thing you don't want to do, don't move the Xbox whilst it's spinning a disc. Chances that you'll scratch up the disc hugely increase.

It may also be an idea to contact Microsoft about the console. They may replace the whole lot for you. I've not heard of this type of problem occurring for a while, unless it's an older model.

There have been many reports saying that the 360 scratches games and some people are saying that it can also happen if the console is moved while the disc is spinning

I have heard people on the xbox forums saying that you can just contact the games company i.e. EA and for a small charge they will exchaange the scratched disc for a new one but not sure if all developers offer this service
