Eon Cancellation fees and student houses

I've a few questions maybe some of the company reps could help out with. I'm moving into a shared student house in September ish (tenancy already started) and I'm wanting to switch to get the cheapest suppliers etc.

As we're all students, we're likely to be away for several weeks during uni holidays etc. Therefore would a tariff with no standing charge be cheaper or would there be very little in it?

Secondly, the tariff I'm leaning towards is Eon save online 9 dual fuel, which has cancellation fees of £30 which 'may' be charged if we move out and do not continue with eon in the new house. This clause about moving house I have never seen before - I've been on similar tariffs before and this hasn't been the case. We're all likely to be moving back into our parents houses over summer anyway so would not be responsible for the bills there. So would we be charged this cancellation fee or not?

Also, am I right in presuming that pretty much all of Npower's tariffs are not worth looking at because all discounts are only given after staying there 12 months, which we will probably not do.
Thanks.

I've also now noticed we're in the middle of price rises - some companies have and some haven't, so am I better waiting a bit before switching?

Firstly, yes, wait until all of the price rises have been announced before you switch, unless the supplier you decide you like is one that has already put their prices up, in which case it won't make much difference.

Unless you're likely to be away for a full quarter then the standing charge/non-standing charge question isn't likely to come into it. As long as you've used a fairly minimal ammount of energy during the quarter then the tier one charge will mean that you're paying the same as if you had a standing charge.

And if the contract says that you need to take the supply with you to your new address when you move out, or pay a fee then that will still apply even if you aren't responsible for the supply (ie. moving bakc in with parents). You've moved out, you haven't set up somenting at a new address in your name, you will get charged.

I have to admit, I've never seen a caveat like that on a contract before and it seems more than a little harsh...

    Hi rev_henry,

    Sorry I didn't see your post :o

Just a few pointers, as I can't recommend tariff's or promote on the forum.

SaveOnline 9 is a no standing charge tariff and as you have said this does have a cancellation fee if you don't complete the full term of the contract, that may be applied.

SaveOnline 9 won't increase in the September.

    Hope this helps a little.

    Helena :)

Thank you both, that is helpful. Don't think I'll bother with Eon in that case as no other tariff has such a cancellation clause. Am I right in thinking EDF is the only one to have not yet announced price rises?
And also, I notice that Eon and a few other companies' price rises are not actually happening until September, so do prices on the comparison sites reflect the new prices or the old?
