Any chance of avoiding charge?

Options
Been having problems with electronic transfers so wrote a check to my OH a week ago. Stupidly I didn't check the account number on the cheque book and used one from an empty but open Nationwide account rather than my main account. The cheque obviously bounced (although the bank has not contacted me about this).

I realise this is my fault but does anyone have any experience of avoiding this charge? Can't really afford it at the moment.

Also, will they take the money from my main account as this account is empty and has been for about 8 years?

  • If the accounts are at the same bank (they are) and in the same name (as in, one isn't a joint account) then yes they can take the money from there.

You could ask for a refund as a gesture of goodwill - if you've never incurred any charges before they may relent - but as you say, it's your fault.
Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!

Phone them up and be reasonable and sweet. A lot of the time they will remove charges if you don't have a history of it. Some banks will do 1 removal every 12 months, or 1 every 6 months.
