DVD or video?

I have Sky and record certain programmes (Lost!) onto video for my daughter, who doesn't have Sky. However my video machine is old and has now stopped working. So I need to replace it as cheaply as possible. I already have a dvd player. My question is can I record from Sky onto dvd if I buy a dvd recorder (she has a dvd player)?

Yes you can record onto DVD, should be the same way as you did the video, using scart leads.
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?

Yes, & if you can afford a bit more I'd recommend a DVD recorder with combined harddrive - lets you do a basic edit, like remove adverts etc. before burning to DVD - makes it nicer to keep.

Out of interest, are there any which remove adverts automatically? I heard there were, but can't find any.
Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

  • No such one that wil automatically pause for ads (certainly not in the UK).

Another vote for a DVD recorder (with a built in hard drive if you can afford it) is the way to go. Will your daughters DVD player playback DVD-RW (or DVD+RW) disks?

If she can, if you bought a recorder that would write to one of the above, you could buy rewritable disks and wipe and re-use after she's watched the episodes.

I upgraded from Video to a DVD recorder about a year ago. Fortunately, I decided to get one with a 80GB hard drive. Best thing I ever did! Despite the fact that I bought a terrible Packard Bell bunch of junk (avoid PB) the convenience of a hard drive is superb. When I have some spare cash, I'll buy a decent model with a 250GB drive.

I just made the 'leap' from VCR to DVD recorder and although it hasn't a hard drive (I only paid £59.99 and it's excellent!) I am more than pleased with the results! Do watch out for the different types of disks though...
  • I think if your going to give the disks to someone else to play on a different player you have to finalize the disk or it won't work. I'm just saying 'cus it confused me for a while
Nothing to see here, move along.

Well I've just bought a dvd recorder (Alba RDVD 1001) - cheapest I could find. What does finalize the disk mean?? And does anyone know which are the best rewritable disks?
