Put that energy into your business.
  • stevenb, I dont often make mistakes. I got the responce I was after re 4 years.

I,ve made my point and clearly you care!

Does not take long to copy and paste or show the inconsitencies in your posts and thinking.

Your still making defamatory remarks. In the real world. Face to face. You would not get away with it. So, why lower yourself to that level on this forum?

I,ve given you a way out of this argument. We should all be able to respect each others opinions and experiences without it becoming a personal fight again. Agreed? Now give it up!

This is a line and no one goes beyond it with anymore trash talk .
    NEA TALK ONLY
ANY NEGATIVE REMARKS WILL REFLECT BADLY ON THE POSTER.

If we don't agree we don't retort and like me if you don't like a particular individual refrain from commenting on there posts.

Basic bank accounts are widely available but a lot don't offer a debit card which is an issue when buying and selling.

Sorry I should have rephrased it, a business bank account is not easy to obtain, a basic account is not supposed to be used for business and if a bank find lots of transactions going into it that look business related then they get upset, I was caught out on that a year ago, a business account was harder to get and took quite a while to process .

Yes, banks do take a close look at what is going through accounts, I agree. But where does this leave the would be self employed person, who could have had stints of bad credit along the way to being unemployed, and then are embarking on self employment , possibly, as you say, Stevenb, without even a debit card, let alone an halfway decent bank account?

I would like to see more practical support given to people embarking on NEA, e.g. arranging a business account for them free of fees for, say, 18 months. Maybe giving them a cash book and showing them how to set it up and fill it in. A kind of starter pack.

It's not possible to start NEA without a bank account (not necessarily a business bank account), since having a bank account is a requirement of claiming NEA.

I'd support a Basic Business Account (one which offers no credit) as a general legal requirement on banks irrespective of NEA. So people with bad credit can establish businesses.

The NEA scheme is implemented differently in every area. I can say that in my area I've had precious little mentoring, no training, and that aspect of the scheme has been a wash.

For me, just doing what the NEA scheme is supposed to do would be a vast improvement :)

It's lucky that I've been self employed a lot in the past... if I was relying on knowledge gained from the NEA scheme I'd be in a lot of trouble.

This is such a logical sensible idea, but seemingly banks see a business account as a risk, but if you don't have an overdraft or a credit card and just have a debit card then it should work no differently to a basic personal account.

For most of us this is the main issue with the scheme, the mentoring / advice aspect was the draw for me, but it never happened and a lot of people need to be pushed and helped in the early days, without the help they would honestly struggle because we all have had a hard time.

Being given money is not enough , working for someone else was the easiest thing ever, I didn't realise at the time but it truly was, but working for yourself with no one else to fall back on is very difficult and making it pay takes a lot of work.
  • Your now established in your business, Andy2013 and earning reasonable profit. Your issue with NEA was the lack of mentoring. Have you thought about doing some mentoring in your area and adding something to NEA that was lacking for you. Part of the problem is always going to be finding quality people who have the experience of running a business. Even better if you have experienced NEA and its difficulties. Put right a few of the wrongs of NEA in your area for those who you mentor? While im sure you dont have a lot of time. New baby on the way and keeping your business growing. A few hours each month could make a massive difference to one or two new starters with NEA.

I,ve always hated being employed. I,ve always found it hard. Nothing winds me up more than having an idea and not being able to follow that idea up because someone else im working for wants to do things in their way. Its the same with time management and doing certain things connected with work in their time. I know how best I work. Im a self-motivated perfectionist. So becoming self-employed is the best thing I could ever have done. Im able to do things in my way and in my time. If I want to work from 6AM until 2AM I can. If I want the morning off to do something different. I can. A few draw-backs such as not knowing when i,ve done enough and calling it a day. Having young kids helps as they become a very good reason to stop and spend some quality time with them. I feel very proud of what im achieving. Every new sale is the next motivation and the next buzz. I can see a future. I can see a path thats very different to doing the 9-5 and sticking to someone elses rules. Its work but its very different to working for someone else. While im sure im different to many self-employed. Self-motivation must be one of the main traits needed to make a new business work and keep working months then years down the line.
