Over credit limit accruing charges monthly!

in Credit cards
Hi.
Looking for some advice please, my husband has a Sainsbury's credit card, credit limit £350 (reduced from £10,000).
His problem is that he was already at his credit limit when he forgot on a few occassions to pay by due date, which incurred late payment charges/overlimit charges. Which have now accrued, we now pay on time - normally £20, as all we can afford. But his balance is now £600 (over credit limit by 250) We claimed back £150 in charges thus reducing total from £750, but they are looking for a minmum payment of £250 to bring it back into credit. He has asked if they would consider changing his credit limit to his outstanding balance to stop incurring charges and close his account therafter but they are refusing to help, he was basically told him he was in a grey area - because he is making regular payments and unless he defaulted they wouldn't be able to assist him.
Is there anything he can do?
If anyone has any suggestions they would be gratefully received!

Usually this kind of problem is resolved by talking to the bank, I appreciate you have done this already though. Perhaps a letter?0

To default should be your very last option, as it would trash your credit file for the next 6 years. It is a small amount, are there any friends or family which could help you bring down the balance just below the credit limit? I would written to the credit card provider explaining your current situation and maybe asking if they could freeze the interest for a few months while you get your finance in order? Otherwise I would suggest that you go and speak to your local Citizen Advice Bureau, they will help you deal with your creditors.0
