Can employer make me redundant only weeks after they add new hire which I trained?

My employer has just made me and about 1/3 of staff redundant. The need for redundancies was announced only 2 weeks after a new temp I had trained for my old position was given a permanent contract. Can you make new hires and two weeks later tell your staff they will be made redundant? What can I do?

(I have been with that employer for eight years and earn a slightly higher salary than the new hire.)

Yes, providing they do it fairly.

When you say they have just made you and others redundant, what does that mean? Have you had a letter saying that you personally are redundant from a partcular date? If so what were the selection criteria? WHat was the pool for selection?

a job role is made redundant....is the new hire doing the same job role as you? or is she doing the job you did, before the job you were just made redundant from? does that make sense?

They made a couple of mistakes and there will be some compensation etc pp...
