Business investments

I have gradually built up a sum of money in my business bank account which I would be interested in investing some of this but unsure where to do it.

Are there companies where you open an account pump in x amount of cash and they trade the stock market for you? Obviously taking a cut per trade

Not sure I'd be comfortable making the decisions myself

  • You'd be looking at selected investment funds.

Have a look at these for a greater understanding

Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!

Strange, I would be very uncomfortable having someone else make the decisions for me! Good job folks are all different!

You can certainly invest into the markets as the business, but have you checked with your accountant to see if this makes sense? If you're going to tie up the funds long term, it might make more sense to do so in your own name so that you can use the various income and capital gains allowances that are available to individuals but usually not businesses.

How much are you looking to invest, and how long for?

For the record, the HSBC World Selection portfolios linked above are really nothing special, but they ARE expensive options if you're looking for managed portfolios.

If in doubt, speak to a local independent financial adviser. You can find them through https://www.unbiased.com. Don't be tempted to speak to a bank adviser, they'll only be looking to sell exactly what the bank tells them to, regardless of whether they're labelled "multi-tied" or "independent".

Is the business a Ltd? If it is then the personal CGT allowance does not apply and the whole amount of any gain may be subject to corporation tax.

It is always different this time. The only thing that is the same is the outcome.
Portfolios are like personalities - one that is balanced is usually preferable.

Exactly why I suggested talking to the accountant before deciding to invest within the company structure. Didn't make much sense at all to me at first glance, after all you use a company to make money for the shareholders and distribute or reinvest the profits.

This is one hell of a sweeping statement and is completely unfair to all the advisors who really do sell best in market. It's also completely misleading.

Given Aegis used to be one of them, I'm sure he can make the statement ;)

If it is your business, have you thought of paying some out to yourself in the form of Pension?

Which advisers would those be? If you're referring to anyone employed by HSBC, they can't sell best in market, they can only sell what HSBC lets them sell, which is determined by selection criteria that baffle those with access to the genuine whole market for investment funds.

How exactly have I been misleading in any way regarding what the bank advisers can and can't do?
