The application form is straightforward but it's unclear as to whether I am to send a cheque and proof of identity straight away or wait until they confirm my account has been opened. I would have thought I should receive the confirmation letter first but it is'nt clear. I will wait but wonder if anyone has been puzzled too.

It will have told you what to do at the end of the application process. Mine asked for a photocopy of my passport only.
You can send the cheque using the details provided in the last screen or alternatively as i did wait for the d/debit to be set up then transfer from there.0 -
Thanks Tom - on checking my emails their standard acknowledgement of my application makes it crystal clear by asking for proof of identity to be sent asap so as not to hold up the application. Why did'nt they say that on the website. They have to make it clear for people like me who are unfamiliar with this kind of thing.0
