Folders read only, unchecking box does not help. Advice please

A few months ago, my daughters lap top was infected with malaware (uselessly i forget what but removed it after downloading malaware bytes just to get lap top working. In middle of uni exams). She had her back up hard drive connected when infection occurred. She has numerous folders with photos in that on both laptop and back up are now read only. Unchecking read only box and applying changes acheives nothing, read only has returned when trying to open folder. It is not just photo folders that are affected. Clicking any 'read only' folder results in an apparent empty folder. There is clearly stuff in folders as 'properties' indicates the amount of data in each folder. Had a half hearted attempt at using Windows answer but acheived very little. Any help, advice or similar experiences greatly appreciated. Prior to infection lap top was fine. With initial infection all icons 'disappeared' from desktop. Thanks again
