No self confidence.. Life seems a mess

Options
Hi

Im starting uni in september as a student nurse, worrying about money and seem to always be on the breadline :( wondering whether to give up my car but then im worrying about how to get to placements which would be one for two weeks in December plus more throughout the year. I will be at salford uni.

It would be fine when not on placement as it is £2.80 a day on the train and literally drops me at uni however I worry about getting to placements with awkward times ect.

My husband has a car which is taxed, mot'ed and ran by work all he has to pay is £60.00 which is his petrol cost to and from work this is why the petrol cost is so high.

I am in a really horrible predicament currently was thinking about DMP but my credit is ok at the moment ( not that im getting more) but i dont think I want to mess it up as I would like a mortgage after uni .

I feel like my husband works very hard and he has very little treats so feel mean asking his to cancel sky or footie.. I also feel like im putting our family through this by going to uni but I am doing it to get a better job at the end of it.

I feel like a tramp and its doing my head in, I never have money to look decent .. Hair hasnt been cut in a year.. going gray :O !! and I just never can justify £10/£20 on a top and if I do i then feel silly because I dont have anything to go with it and one item just seems wasted in my wardrobe lol Also if I do treat myself very rarely I end up wearing it day in day out and re washing it so then I end up making it look amess very quickly :(

I seriously wear like 2/3 items of clothes all the time.. my wardrobe is full of clothes that dont fit me from before the kids or maternity wear ( all washed n washed so wouldnt go on ebay )

I just feel at a loss with myself and my budget :( This month im £300 short so have to find that or it will follow me around next month :( this is from school uniform, tax thats due on car that havent put away, birthdays and a dentist bill for my husband

sorry if I have rambled :(

As for debts, you MUST clear these asap, your gaining interest on them and hurting your credit rating in the process. Im assuming your gaining more debt through becoming a student and paying course fees etc?

You will need to learn to live with only a few hundred extra, nurses really aren't well paid. My mom is on 1-200 more than what your on at the moment and shes fully qualified working everyday. You need to reduce your outgoings.

Im no proffessional this is just my opinion. Good luck.

I also recommend letting the husband read this post.....your in a bad way emotionally and he needs to understand and be there for you. Together you can get through this....trust me!

Have you thought about looking for clothing on ebay? Not all of it is 2nd hand etc, majority of it is brand new with tags etc at dirt cheap prices.
  • have you thought about goin through your wardrobe, as I see that you say there is lots of clothes that don't fit you. you could go and do a carboot or sell on ebay? might not make loads but perhaps enough for a new set of clothes?

    Hi

As you know from the problems this month, you really need to budget for costs that you can predict like car tax. Also you need a budget for things like dentists. Putting a few quid away each month is not saving, it is self-insurance to cover periodic expenses.

You can save on groceries, your SKY and mobils costs. You really do have to sort them out.

Go over to the money saving oldstyle forum and list up the contents of your cupboards, fridge and freezer and aks for help with a menu plan for this month.

For hair cuts look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw76mmh4o8Y or try this method

Wash your hair brush then hang your head forwards. Brush your hair forwards and then grasp it in one hand making sure that the "reverse ponytail" is in the centre of your face. You could put a band round the hair at this point, or just hold it. Cut the hair sticking out of your hand off with sharp scissors. This will give you a deep V with long layers.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Thankyou for your help I will answer some points.

Benefits.. Childcare and working tax credits I am no longer entitled to as I dont work 16 hours because I am at uni.. this has been a really bad hit to us.

Car.. I am thinking of giving up.. I dont think a cheaper car would be that cheaper I think it is because I am a new driver and under 25??

Sky and phone yes they are alot, I think I am in contracts though :( I will ring up and enquire

Internet is with beun ltd my husband set this up it isnt related to sky.

I know nursing isnt amazingly paid... however I think I would like to work my way up the ladder.. I think it would be better paid if I then went into a specialist branch plus I am only on minimum wage now. I am abit nervous doing all this to end up in a crap paid job ?
I will be in debt of 7k after uni which is my student loan total. My tutition fees and bursary I dont have to paid back. My thinking is also that even though yes I will not be on huge wage to start off with by the time I am finished my youngest will be starting school and I will then be saving on childcare fees?

My husband is an ICT engineer and works 40 hours.. I feel his wage is very low for his skill and hope he can up this aswell by the time im qualified. I have a huge fear of doing all this for nothing and still living a lifestyle where I am only just covering thing. Any opinions??

My clothes are all really worn down i dont even no why I keep them I think its to make my wardrobe look full to my husband/friends ect.. I feel like my husband is embarased of how i look dress he has commented more than once but there is always something that needs the money more.

Thanks yes the normal thing is if something needs to be bought which isnt in the budget like new appliance or clothes for kids i take it out of groceries, I think I am in contract with phone and sky I will enquire

Sack SKY ASAP! If you still want loadsachannels then freesat has loadsachannels, you just miss a few specific ones. You can probably lose the landline and broadband too - there may be somewhere at work or nearby where you can catch up on emails and a few websites for free/cheap, or a neighbour's place, or if you have a wireless lappy use pub and coffeeshop free wireless, or do a deal with a neighbour to leech their wireless broadband in exchange for a spot of gardening/babysitting/ironing/etc. Mobiles down to £10/month each on PAYG, and that £80/month saving will go a long way!

    Hi,

Sorry to hear you're feeling down at the moment. Going to uni and giving up work might seem scary but you will have a profession which should ensure you get a reasonable income for life. And if your husband is in ICT there should be good opportunities for getting on and increasing his income (as much as anyone can these days :) ) However, you need to get your finances in good shape now so that you can get through the training (not sure how many years nursing is?). So a few points to consider:

    1) Definitely cut down on mobile phone, sky and insurance for ps3 etc
    2) Does the university offer childcare facilities? Might be cheaper than what you're paying at the moment!
    3) Grey hair? Get to Boots and buy yourself a semi-permanent colour. You'll have the greys sorted for less than a fiver and your confidence will be boosted too. OR find a local training college where they will give you a haircut and colour for a greatly-reduced price when done by a trainee under supervision. I've done this myself and whilst I wouldn't say they were as good as Vidal Sassoon they were perfectly fine ;)
    4) I'd seriously look at getting rid of the second car if public transport is reliable enough.

I wish you all the best, hope the training works out well x

Car insurance, see if putting your dad on the insurance takes it down, I've been looking at quotes and it reduces mine by a third. Also put exact same car, exact same details into both go compare and compare the market, 400 difference
