Allotments

Yeay - I'm nearly top of the waiting list for a 5 pole allotment in my area. My dad had an allotment so I have him on hand (although at a distance) to tell us what to do. Are there any good allotment websites/forums, what should I grow first (especially as it will probably be about September/Oct when I get the keys to it!) and who has success stories.

I'm dead excited, I've been looking at sheds!

Towards the end of the year, clear a patch for garlic, this should go in Oct/Nov. 180 cloves, ie approx 2kg will take up around a 10ft x 6ft area.
  • I've just got mine tonight after a 4 year wait - a sadly neglected plot that is weed ridden and resembles a field at the moment.

    Umm... Help!

Any websites you find, I would much appreciate it if you could put links here.

    I also like http://chat.allotment.org.uk/.

Definitely garlic and shallots/onions. If you clear other beds, plant a winter green manure that you can dig in ready for spring. I planted mine last year and harvested 140 bulbs this year!

I can recommend the shedstore for well priced delivered sheds (go through quidco to get more money off). We put our new shed onto cheap concrete slabs from Wickes (less than £2 each) laid on sand covered weed suppressing membrane.

I took my allotment over in June last year and we have now developed the whole plot (it is only a half plot officially) and installed the new shed two weeks ago. I got hold of a free greenhouse and did quite well with my cut flower border from £ shop bargains! We have been self-sufficient in everything except mushrooms since mid-June.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
