Rip off upgrade prices

How can the virgin group justify £1206 one way upgrade to sydney for two people, on their virgin holiday website and only £1118 for two people bothways on virgin atlantic website. What a rip off surely they all belong to Richard Branson!

Flight booking class would be more relevant than cabin class on this occasion. I'm pretty sure holiday bookings (especially in combination with a hotel) book into a different bucket than buying a return flight independently.

Hence when you look to upgrade you get thrown all sorts of odd prices due to the underlying booking class.

If you want a better seat on the plane it's better to book into that cabin in the first place as part of a flight plus hotel, rather than book then upgrade.

(That's my understanding, but I've never actually booked a flight plus hotel myself)

I'd say it was pretty simple. Supply and Demand.

One way fares tend to have more flexibility than return tickets so you can do things like change flight times and get a refund. Return tickets are more likely to be "use it or lose it" and may not have any option to change at any cost

If you are happy with the dates and seats then just book the cheapest even if it leaves you with a return ticket that you just throw away.

This. Have a look at http://v-flyer.com/the-toolbox/fare-codes?code=v . A ticket booked via Virgin Holidays is just about the most restricted ticket you can have and therefore will cost much more to upgrade.

Compare the cost of your V class ticket with the price of a Y class economy ticket and you'll see why your upgrade costs more.

Thanks for that - I figured that was roughly the reason.
