  • thanks for all the handy hints guys, had a similar problem, with a side hinged bathroom window. managed to jemmy it open as one or two suggested, then found that the top pin was jammed but not seperated from the central mechanism. once the top holding bracket was removed the pin operated perfectly well. none the less i cleaned and emery clothed it, then widened the locating hole on the retaining bracket slightly using a drill bit. re-assembled and the window now works again! thanks for all the great advice lads!
  • Hi I also need help. I am from the states and unfamiliar with UK Double glazed windows. Ny window is stuck when closed a pin in the top of the window moves up and the one in the bottom moves down. It wont open The top one comes down but the bottom one stays in. Does anyone know anyone in London that I can call to fix this. I really appreciate any help you can offer

The gearbox on mine had failed. The guy who fixed it had a magic tool (basically a thin bent metal rod with a sharp hook on the end). He inserted that through one of the handle mounting holes, jammed it into the serrated edges on the jammed bar, and managed to release that arm. Then just replaced the gearbox.
Easy enough if you know what you're doing. I did not, so well worth his £30 I thought.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
  • Hi macman

Do you have the name and number of the person who fixed your lock in London? Thanks
  • For anyone else out there, my window jammed, I got a mini pry bar from eBay, and it took less than 10 minutes to get window open, I am ordering a new mechanism online and can fit it myself. Quite an easy job with it being ground floor. I checked you tube for vids on what to do. :T

I had a window stuck closed at one side because the brass bolt was not retracting. I solved this by vibrating it free using a small electric sander. Place a small piece of plywood or similar to protect the frame and then put the nose of the sander vibrating as close to the bolt position as possible.it took about 10 seconds for mine to shake back into its hole. Hope this works for you folks
  • Can I have please the contact number for the guy who fixed your window. Thank you':j
  • Hi Macman,
Please can you give me the contact details of that guy with the magic tool?
    Thanks

  • Hi,
Just had the same problem of the top bolt dropping but the bottom bolt not lifting.
I simply slid in a thin knife in the inside of the window at the bottom near the bolt and then a flat screwdriver beside it and jemmied the window open (pushing down on the screwdriver and lifting the window out and upwards). Slightly damaged the window trim but did open.
In my case, after opening I could see that the window lock metal had sheared and so will need to replace.
    Good luck, Tony
