Switiching a Direct Debit

Options
Hello everyone,

Firstly apologies if this has been asked before - I haven't used this site much and the amount of threads on here is overwhelming!

I'm hoping this is a simple question..

I have 2 Bank accounts open at the moment, 1 with Santander and 1 with Halifax. I've had both open for a while and was using the Santander one as my main account. I now want to use the Halifax one as the main one and eventually close the Santander one down. I have 1 direct debit set up on the Santender one that I want to transfer to my Halifax, but who do I need to contact? Santander, Halifax or the Company the DD is with?

Thought I'd ask her before spending ages on hold ringing up the banks..

Thanks for your help

If it's just one DD I'd be tempted to just login to the Santander account and cancel the DD. Then contact the company you have the DD with to give them the new bank details for the Halifax account.

Obviously if it's a DD for something like a Credit Card then make sure you make a manual payment if the DD is due to come out within the next 1-2 weeks. It'd be worth waiting until the DD comes out of Santander before cancelling it to allow the most time for the DD to then be setup with Halifax.

Best bet is to contact the originator with your Halifax details.

As above, agree with the originator when the last payment will be taken from Santander and after that's occurred cancel the DD. That way no errors can be made.
