Based on the above, yes it is reasonable (whether they will or not is another issue, but I believe that it is reasonable to ask the question).

Is it reasonable of the vendor to not move into rented accomodation?

I think you may have hit the nail on the head- as it took 7 months for them to find a buyer, you would think that they would be trying to not upset us!

I didn't realise you were quite so tempted to walk away. In that case, definitely ask them to go into rented and just sell. Also didn't realise the chain was now longer! Is it even complete? Are you sure, or are they fobbing you off?

I honestly don't see what you have to lose if you're prepared to walk away anyway. Just ask - not too politely! Let them know just how peed off you are...

Apparently it is complete. Apparently, they are purchasing off of a couple who are moving into the house of a man who is ready to move also (I have no idea where he is going!). However, I just don't believe that they will have started the process of searches/survey etc until they have a confirmed buyer themselves.
I personally believe, based on prior form, that they are fobbing us off :(
If we walk away we lose the £600 survey fee and about £1000 in solicitor's fees, if not more. Also, we face ending up in the same predicament with another property.
Unfortunately, we have built up quite a good rapport with the couple we are buying from and as my partner and I are both quite... unconfrontational... by nature we don't want to upset them, especially as they can leave the house in a state!
It also annoys me that we offered them full asking price too yet we are still mucked about!
    :(

Can't as he hasn't done searches/survey etc on house he wants to buy :(

I personally think the only viable way forward is to say that in retrospect, we aren't happy with what we have been told and wish to exchange and complete by a set date regardless of what else is happening in the chain...
